This would have been the mild ale, which Orwell associated with the working classes, who the Old Etonian socialist liked to rub shoulders with.
I love Mild. It is increasingly hard to find. The Harp near Charing Cross always had a mild on until Fullers bought it. Not sure I've seen one in there since.

Love drinking a mild when I visit the UK. We don't have it at all here in the US.
As you said, mild has survived in the southeast -- I've drank it in Kent and in some London pubs.
